The world is divided into followers and leaders. This is as true in the world of fashion just as it is in politics or business. The girl who knows the secrets is the one who sets the trends. When others are buying high heels, she buys brown boots and starts a new trend.
It is not just the fact that she bought something different. There’s something about her attitude or personality that makes the difference. She’s not the girl who doesn’t know that high heels are in fashion and so buys boots. She’s the one who knows she’s going against the current trends, but does it anyway.
When everybody else is carrying hobo handbags, she is carrying a snakeskin clutch bag. When the others see her with a hobo, they buy those. Why does this happen? What’s the secret behind her charisma?
No, she may not be the most beautiful young woman in town. It’s too easy to look at it that way. Just look at the top models. Those that have staying power, who reign in the fashion industry for a long time, very often aren’t the most beautiful. They’re actually the ones who have physical flaws, but flaunt them rather than hide them.
What is it that makes us admire them so much? It must have something to do with the fact that we all have imperfections, but feel ashamed of them. These models are an inspiration because they give women the feeling they can be themselves, no matter what other people think.
When models like these endorse a perfume, women run to buy the perfume. Like magic, a dab of the perfume changes the buyer into someone more like the model. Her confidence is lifted a little bit. It may be based on an illusion, but that’s how fashion works.
Did you know that the word glamor comes from a word that used to mean, ‘magic spell?’ When you think about it, that’s what fashion is: magic. The sorceress waves her wand and suddenly every woman in the world is wearing shirts for girls. She waves it again and they are wearing frilly blouses.
Many people have studied the magic of charisma, but nobody has really come up with an adequate explanation for it. The gap toothed model looks glamorous because of the gap between her teeth. Another girl, equally attractive, just seems to have a gap. If somebody could package charisma and sell it, they would become very rich indeed.
