Stress Management Technique: Self-Hypnosis for Women

The most common way to prevent, overcome, or reduce the effects of stress is through relaxation. There are a lot of relaxation techniques out there. They come in many forms; from the simplest practices such as breathing exercises, listening to music, and visualization, to the more complicated techniques such as yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, pranayama, tai chi, and meditation. There is a also a certain level of relaxation factor that can be found in physical activities such as walking, gardening, and whatnot. Women, in particular, enjoy a soothing massage to unwind. Others take it one step higher by going for acupuncture.

One particular relaxation technique that seems to have been overlooked a lot is hypnosis. Hypnosis has been used a lot in stress management and treatment of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorders, and other psychological conditions that arise from stress. Hypnosis has also been used to minimize the pain a woman goes through while giving birth. The reason that this method isn’t used that often is the fact that it is usually associated with magic tricks, witchcraft, or sorcery by the common people. For psychologists, however, it is referred to as the state of heightened concentration; similar to being in a meditative trance.

The popular media has made hypnosis famous through lines such as “You feel sleepy”, or something to that effect. While hypnosis is a valid relaxation method, you are actually not turned into a walking zombie. During the hypnotic trance, you are actually very much awake. In fact, you are more focused than in your normal state. The hypnotic trance is the state where you are awake and you have focused attention, but having a reduced level of awareness. It is popular belief that you are going to be acting like a mindless zombie while under hypnosis. The reality is your body is relaxed while your mind running at full speed.

This fact alone makes hypnosis a very useful relaxation tool. There are several forms of hypnosis relaxation techniques for women and men. There is one where you will be working with a hypnotic therapist. There is also a method called self-hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is very much similar to meditation. You turn your full attention into a single key point, followed by saying phrases of affirmation to yourself.

Once you put yourself in the trance, you are open to your own suggestions. This is where the line is drawn between meditation and self-hypnosis. While under the relaxing hypnotic trance, you become more willing to accept whatever is said to you. When you say positive things to yourself, you wake up from that trance feeling positive about yourself. Hypnosis relaxation techniques for women aren’t just about resting your muscles. It is also for changing your behavior for the better.
